Different Types of Storm Damage to Roofs

Identifying  Effects of Wind, Hail, and Water on Your Roof

Your roof is designed to be your home’s first defense against the elements, so it is important to be aware of the potential storm damage your roofing material experience at the hands of tempestuous winds, pelting hail, and excessive rain.

WIND DAMAGE

Even if a storm does not bring significant hail or rain, winds alone can do lasting damage to your roof.

Forceful gusts can tear pieces off shingled roofs, cause cracks in flat roofs, and create general wear-and-tear on gutters and flashing.

HAIL DAMAGE

Known as one of the most harmful weather conditions, hail can bring damage ranging from minor to catastrophic.

While smaller hailstones can cause shingles to shed granules and accelerate your roof’s aging, large pieces of hail hitting your roof can result in costly leaks and even necessitate complete roof repair or replacement.

WATER DAMAGE

Torrential rains can cause a variety of roof damage including erosion and movement of shingles, moisture and wood rot beneath the underlayment, and mold in your home’s interior.

Since rainstorms are so common in various climates and areas, it’s important to be especially mindful of their potential effects.

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR ROOF HAS STORM DAMAGE

If the damage to your roof is significant, you may be able to identify at least the big issues yourself before calling your insurance and a local contractor.

  1. Look for granules in your gutters after the storm to determine if there has been minor wear on your roof

   2. Dings and dents on gutters and flashing are also usually proof of more serious damage from hail

   3. Pieces of shingles or other roofing materials in your yard and driveway provide a clear indication of needed repairs

WHEN TO CALL A ROOFING CONTRACTOR

If a storm’s effects are more subtle, it’s  best to call a trusted roofing company as the first step to do a thorough evaluation of your situation.

It’s also valuable to know that hail-damaged roofs and wind-damaged roofs often show their injuries more readily while roofs that are predominately water-damaged may require additional expertise for an effective assessment.

For more information about your specific roofing repair needs and to schedule an assessment, contact a trusted roofing contractor in the Colorado Springs area.
